: Bart, did you cut the split seed open
: to check the status of the embryo?
: Could you see the tip of an embryo
: in the split? If the embryos in the
: seeds are full-sized and if that is
: what caused the seed to split, then
: I would recommend harvesting now.
: However, there could be other causes
: of the split and you wouldn't want
: to harvest too early if the latter
: is the case. Please report back and
: let us know what you find.

: Upon inspection of one of my seed
: producing Cycas guizhouensis I
: noticed that a couple of seeds had
: split sarcotesta. I removed one
: from the plant and viewed the split
: with a hand lens and noticed that
: the sclerotesta was split as well.
: Are these seeds about to germinate
: on the plant? Is this unusual? I
: was going to wait for the seed to
: fall off of the plant and collect
: them for planting later, but should
: I harvest them now? Any comments,
: or suggestions would be appreciated.

Jody, I split two seeds open today and found no embryo development. We have had a lot of rain in the past couple of days and a few more seeds have split. I may go ahead and harvest the seed and store for three or four months before I check again. I have another plant with a larger cone that is a little further behind in development. It will be interesting to see if it does the same thing.
