Tom,I think you nailed it. My lehmannii's 3/4" caudex was completely burried. The leaves are still green at the tips, but are brown and mushy at the base. I already removed the soil from around the caudex. Is there anything else I should do? Thanks

: I have 3 Encphalartos seedling that
: have all went south over the summer.
: One lehmanii in a 1 gallon pot with
: 2 fronds both black and wilted at
: the base but the leaves are still
: green. One altensteinii and one
: longifolius in liner pots, both
: brown and crispy. All 3 are in
: original pots from A&A cycads in
: SO. Cal and Iv'e had them about 9
: months under a shade cloth in my
: back yard. I water them about once
: a week and it has been around 100
: degrees all summer with intense
: sunlight here in Central Cal. Any
: thoughts? Thanks, Chad

: Well, I'm back from speaking at
: the AZH conference. It went real
: well. I see Jody has come in and
: helped while I was gone. I think you
: have 2 problems here. The crispy
: plants are for sure a problem with
: not watering enough, especially with
: the heat. As Jody said, many cycads
: are quite tolerant of watering extra
: as long as they do have good
: drainage. The rotted leaves are
: another thing and are different than
: the crispy leaves on the other
: plants. In that case, was the apex
: above the soil suface, or was it
: below and vulnerable to pathogens?
