Encephalartos seedlings not doing good

I have 3 Encphalartos seedling that have all went south over the summer. One lehmanii in a 1 gallon pot with 2 fronds both black and wilted at the base but the leaves are still green. One altensteinii and one longifolius in liner pots, both brown and crispy. All 3 are in original pots from A&A cycads in SO. Cal and Iv'e had them about 9 months under a shade cloth in my back yard. I water them about once a week and it has been around 100 degrees all summer with intense sunlight here in Central Cal. Any thoughts? Thanks, Chad
