: After visiting San Francisco Botanical
: Garden I became very interested in
: cycads. I would like to have some
: cycads of my own to enjoy.
:
: I have no outdoor space for them
: though. I live in San Francisco and
: have huge north facing windows that
: get strong reflected light the
: entire day. I get no direct
: sunshine however.
:
: Are there any cycads that I can grow
: indoors?
:
: Thanks!

There aren't probably a lot of cycads that would thrive in conditions like that, but there are plenty that would tolerate it. If you look at the Cycad Pages website. They have a classification section that you click on and it has all the genus and then species with write ups on all the cycad species. Pretty much, anything that lives in a rain forst type place, or better said, are understory plants in habitat, they shoudl all do alright with bright indirect sunlight. Small ceratozamias maybe, for sure some of the tropical looking zamias as well as some of the pumila types. Bownenias might be perfect. Some of the small macrozamias might do alright, but might be a bit stubborn to grow well. Might be about 80- species so you have to look through the lists and see what size is alright for you and shape as to whether the plant needs to be upright growing, or if you have room for some spread as well.
