: Tom,
: I have a Ceratozamia latifolia with
: a 6" caudex that developed bud
: rot. I removed the soft tissue,
: treated with Daconil and allowed it
: dry out. What are the chances that
: it will push a new bud from the side
: of the caudex, and is there anything
: else I can do to increase the chance
: of that happening?
: Thanks,
: Bart from Houston
:
: I have seen new buds come out of
: the middle after they have hardened
: up and I have seen them produce new
: offsets as well, so you have a few
: ways for it to come back. I have
: some old plants of norstogii that
: obviously died at the apex and later
: produced as many as 12 new buds that
: were located on top of the flattened
: apex.
: On what else you could do, you could
: seal up the top, especially if you
: get lots of rain. You could use
: black tree paint sealer, or even
: spray some "Great Stuff"
: all over the apex to keep water from
: getting in there, which will help it
: harden off better.

Thanks Tom. I am going to try and leave it unsealed, but protect is from the rain until it completely hardens off and see what develops. This happened to a Cycas taitungensis of mine and it pushed offsets without sealing the apex. I resently removed the largest offset and am trying to root it in perlite.
Thanks again,
-Bart
