They certainly were burnt back this last season, but I have had several outside that don't get burned very often under thick tree cover. Out in the open,but under the edge of a tree, they will usually start burning at about 23F. Deep under some trees over by the red gingers I had, that large ferox hasn't burned until it got below 19F. They CAN get frost damage, so if you plant them under a good oak tree, they will be good until it gets below about 20F. So they aren't as tropical as some may think.
