: how can you tell if sago seeds have
: been fertilized? I have two palms
: that have hundreds of seeds in them
: and the pod is starting to open.
: Two months ago I had a male cone
: come up and I cut it off so the
: plant would keep sprouting. Did I
: cout it off too soon? The plants
: are about 6 years old and at first I
: thought they had some terible
: disease and later I found they were
: just doing what God intended for
: them to do. Thanks for this website
: and any info you can give me.

If you didn't want to use the male cone, then you cut it off at the right time. If you are in a city, chances are your female was pollinated by a male that could have been as far away as 1/4 mile. When it comes time, you can cut a few of the seed open to check for embryos, like I show in my germination articles (in my website)but in general, if the seeds are small, like less than an inch in diameter, the seeds did not get fertilized. If the seeds are larger, and round, and are about an inch and a half, those are most likely, good seeds.
