fertilized seeds

how can you tell if sago seeds have been fertilized? I have two palms that have hundreds of seeds in them and the pod is starting to open. Two months ago I had a male cone come up and I cut it off so the plant would keep sprouting. Did I cout it off too soon? The plants are about 6 years old and at first I thought they had some terible disease and later I found they were just doing what God intended for them to do. Thanks for this website and any info you can give me. George
