: Mr. Broome, thank you sooo much. I am
: on the third week of the coffee
: treatment and it is working. I have
: been spraying the plants with the
: coffee "tea" once a week
: on one plant that had more than the
: others and it has worked better than
: anything else I have tried. I have
: contacted others in my subdivision
: and have passed the word on the
: coffee solution. So how far away
: are we from a chemical solution to
: rid these things from our sagos
: completely?

: I work very hard and my favorite way
: to relax is to take care of my many
: sago's. I love my plants and they
: have gotten those pesty Asian Scale
: bugs. I have about 70 plants
: ranging in size and I have been
: fighting this for a couple of years.
: I am even trying coffee grounds at
: present. I was told recently to use
: "orphean" or
: "acethate" but I cant find
: either one. What kills these darn
: things. I am at my wits end. Thanks
: to all for your help.

: You have the name wrong. If you
: want to use a product on the shelf
: that would either be Orthene or
: Orthenex (which has Orthene in it as
: well as Funginex in it) My local
: Home Depot carries it. In case you
: haven't read my article on coffee,
: here is the link on TCS website:

The Asian scale is very easy to kill as long as you treat the root system as well as the top. the problem is that they can become airborne, so as long as there are people who do not treat their plants within that distance, then treatment will be an ongoing thing. If, for say, you lived out where there was no sagos within a mile from you, you could treat your plant once and never have to treat it again. For that matter, if you had a subdivision that was out of the way and everyone treated their plants, then the whole place would be clean, that is, as long as nobody brought it in again from a nursery. HD is known for having the scale and not doing anything about it, even when someone brings it to someone's attention. Remember, besides the spraying, if you werte to mulch your plant with the grounds twice a year, it should stay clean all year. If everyone did that in your subdivision, you probably would not have to spray again. with the mulch, you are treating the top and you are treating the bottom.
