: I purchased my house about 5 yrs ago
: and luckily the previous owner had
: several sego palms already planted
: for us. Some of the plants are
: quite large and I'd consider them to
: be around 200 yrs old or so
: (comparing to the plant on the
: website). Last year we had a local
: landscaper trim some of the offsets
: and also fertilizing them as well.
: He noticed that on my largest of our
: segos we were getting brown leaves
: that originate from the inside of
: the leave to the outside. The
: outside of the leaves remains green
: and the affliction seems to get
: better toward the end of the leaf.
: I read your webpage with that
: described the brown new flush and it
: does look similar to our plant but
: like I said, only the inside of the
: leaves on the new flush are turning
: brown (I estimate that the new flush
: was around 3-5 weeks ago). So, with
: what I have described, does this
: sound like the element deficiency
: that you mention in your article?
:
: Also, where can I buy Manganese
: Sulfate and Iron Sulfate? Lowes?
:
: Many thanks in advance and was very
: happy to see you website that has
: such great info on these wonderfult
: plants

Thanks for the kind words. I'm gald you found my site and articles first and then wrote in. Fist of all, from what I understand, a single stem of a Cycas revoluta only lives about 125 years, or a bit more, but clusters can be very old from seed. On the main question, the key is, do the brand new leaves come out where they already have some discoloration, or mottling? If the new leaves come out looking bad, then you are right, this is the problem in my article. I used to make my own product that took care of this as well as my Cycad Special in small jugs, but a California cycad grower made a formal complaint to the FL. Dept of Ag. on me and they came out and shut me down. I used to get both products at the local fertilizer plant and I would mix them myself. There are a couple private nurseries in my area that carry 5 pound bags of these things, but I haven't seen much of this kind of thing at HD or Lowes. You wouldn't need much, just about 12 tbs. to take care of your plant, but it never hurts to use the mixture every spring just to get your sagos going good first off. I don't know if you have an Ace Hardware in your area but that seems to be an inovative store that will go out and find unusual things to help their customers. It wouldn't hurt to ask them if they don't have it on the shelf.
