: Hi, I bought a small potted (7"
: clay} sago about a year ago from a
: local home improvement center.
: There are small stones glued tightly
: together on top of the soil (for
: looks, I imagine); water passes
: through. The "care" tag
: was missing and I had no idea at the
: time what I bought, but really loved
: it's look. I recently vacationed in
: Florida where I learned from friends
: that it's a sago. After having it
: for a few months, about 1/2 of the
: fronds (all lower) browned and dried
: up. I cut them off. I see no new
: growth coming at all, though the
: remaining fronds seem healthy and
: are nicely green. Can you give me
: any basics for caring for this
: plant? How much water, how often,
: what kind of light, is a liquid
: fertilizer like MiracleGro adequate,
: should it be repotted to encourage
: growth. It lives on Cape Cod and
: has remained an indoor plant since I
: got it. Thanks so much!

Well what you have is a cycad. I think a quarter of the people who look at this forum probably bought one of those sagos with the white rocks glued on the top of whatever soil is in that pot. I'm sorry to say that there are probably a few people laughing right now as they read your post because so many people have been there, done that. First, you need to get those rocks out of there and put it in a decent pot with some good, well draining soil. Now, the main thing I would say about this particular species is that it prefers full sun. Other than that, go back to the main page and read the header. You will see my site is there and I have an article on almost every cycad cultivation subject you can think of. If you can take all that in, you will be a cycad expert. Some of the articles are about just weird stuff I do, but you will see the basic, soil, water, and fertilizer to get you started. Hea, if you have more questions, you know where to find me. Sometimes I don't answer posts for medium periods of time and sometimes I get right on them, that all depends on how busy I am doing other stuff, like taking care of 30,000 plants by myself and doing other articles, etc.
