You should read both my germination articles on my website which is linked in the header. You can do things several ways, but the article talks about what I do. But to answer a couple quick ones, the inside of the seed feeds the new plant before it produces a couple of leaves, that is why sometimes older seeds might sprout but then the plant dies. I don't like vermiculite because it keeps cycads too wet, so me, I would take them out of that stuff and use something that is not so wet, like coarse sand, or pumice and then I keep the seedlings in a community pot for as long as 2 years.
