: Howdy,
:
:
:
: I live in Houston, TX and was given
: an opportunity to dig two large
: Sago’s for free. There is one male
: and one female both 5’ tall by 5’
: wide with 14” trunk. The male cone
: had already expire and new leaves
: were present before transplant. The
: female of similar size has finished
: producing seeds and they are falling
: without help. I followed good
: transplant procedures, digging
: proper root ball and moving to new
: locating already prepared. The soil
: is sandy and drains well.
:
:
:
: Both have been in new location only
: one week. We have had two small
: freezes. The male seems to be in
: better shape; green w/ little cold
: damage. The Female is yellow and
: browning. I have removed more of
: the lower leaves on the female to
: reduce stress. Both have Asian
: Cycad Scale, but female is worse.
:
:
:
: Questions:
: Well if you read my how to transplant article in my linked website, you will see that I tell epople to remove all the leaves and why your plant is browning. So I would remove all the material on both plants to reduce stress and becasue of the the cold damage would be irrelevant .
: When should I fertilize the soil?
You really don't want to force new leaves till after the last freeze event. I'd use triple super phosphate to help root growth, but lay off the nitrogen for another month.
:
: Should Manganese applications start
: sooner (liquid)?
Shouldn't be needed unless that was a probelm befere they were moved.
:
: Should I manually remove old seeds
: and plant debris from female?
yes, from both plants
:
: When should I treat with pesticide
: to kill Asian Cycad Scale?
I would treat the ground and the stem at once before new leaves come out. I'd dump used coffee grounds all over the root area and mud up some grounds and pour them all over the top of the stem.
:
: Will Malathion kill Scale?
only crawlers, so for the most part, no
:
: Any info would certainly help. I
: don’t want to lose these specimens.
:
: Thank You
