Howdy,
I live in Houston, TX and was given an opportunity to dig two large Sago’s for free. There is one male and one female both 5’ tall by 5’ wide with 14” trunk. The male cone had already expire and new leaves were present before transplant. The female of similar size has finished producing seeds and they are falling without help. I followed good transplant procedures, digging proper root ball and moving to new locating already prepared. The soil is sandy and drains well.
Both have been in new location only one week. We have had two small freezes. The male seems to be in better shape; green w/ little cold damage. The Female is yellow and browning. I have removed more of the lower leaves on the female to reduce stress. Both have Asian Cycad Scale, but female is worse.
Questions:
When should I fertilize the soil?
Should Manganese applications start sooner (liquid)?
Should I manually remove old seeds and plant debris from female?
When should I treat with pesticide to kill Asian Cycad Scale?
Will Malathion kill Scale?
Any info would certainly help. I don’t want to lose these specimens.
Thank You
