If he got 18 cones at the top of the plant, what your friend has is 18 tops that are either coming out, or will come out. You are right, it will be very crowded. The only thing you can do is remove the leaves that come out and interfere with the other leaves and any leaf that comes straight out and does not fight with the other interior leaves can be kept on. You really can not kill any of the apecies so trying to reduce how many therew are really doesn't work and could very well just kill the whole plant.
