Hello tom, I just wanted to post a followup on some advice I received a while ago on cultivating microcycas.
I did a little spin on your idea of spagnum moss, and though I just started using this, I can't really say yet if it is better or not than other ideas.
For these seeds I wanted good aeration and a little better moisture control. When germinating seeds I like the baggie with perlite. I wanted something a little better for microcycas, so I used a mixture of 40-45% perlite, 40-45% pumice, and 10-20% spagnum. I got the spagnum from homedepot in a little baggie, and I cut it up into smaller pieces with scissors. Mix together and added water.
It looks pretty good. Doesn't stay too wet, and doesn't dry out too fast, and this mixture can be watered more, as the excess drains away. (I think to ability to water more allows the mixture to be cleansed) The spagnum does appear to keep the mix 'fresh', as seeds in this mixture seem to keep fresher and not rot. Other mixes seem to be more rot prone. even 100 % perlite has a tendency of retaining too much moisture, esp. at the bottom of a treepot.
Anyhow, nothing scientific. And it's too new for me to recommend, but it looks promising.
And 3 micro's with nice roots so far..Hoping for more..
