: How hardy are Dioon merolae and
: Lepidozamia peroffskyana?
:
Merolaes aren't all that cold hardy. I think they are the worst for the dioons that look like an edule. At 19F during the 89' freeze, plants with a foot of stem got major stem damage or total death. They should be good under tree cover at about 20 though.
Now peroffskyanas are better and I can have those outside in my location. I'm not sure what the lowest temprature would be but many of the large ones in central Florida were still alive after the 89' freeze. I have found that they will get about 30% leaf burn at 21F under my trees, but would probably take down to about 17 or 18F before you would have to worry about stem damage. I sell both these species, but I keep my merolaes under cover during our worst winters just in case.
