I am guessing that on a species that likes to be somewhat dry at certain times of year, having 6 seedlings rot, probably isn't a bad percentage. These things happen with hard to grow seedlings and seeds.
Having said that, you aren't watering too much and your menium sounds like it drains well. Are you sure they rotted, or did the radicles dry out? If they rotted, did they trun any color, like some sort of black stuff on them or anything? If rot, I would spray something like Daconil on them when you wet them and see if that helps the others. FOr that matter, on really picky plants like microcycas, I used to water them with only a fungicide mixture so that they were getting moisture, but also being treated every time.
