: How do you tell a male or female?
The male cones will be much thinner than female cones. The cone scales on females are much bigger because they are holding the seeds. If you want to see pictures of both male and female cones on a zamia, look at my article section in my website, that is linked in the header. Look at my article on collecting pollen and then the one on hand pollination. You will see me pollinating a female and also in the pollen article, you will see a male zamia cone with the pollen sacks showing. The male cone is not from the same species as the femal cone, but it will give you a good idea of what to look for. The key thing is that if you are going out to look at cones, the females will still be able to be seen but the male cones on coonties, anyway, have all dried up for now, but they should be putting out new cones in the next couple of months.
