: I just want to ask two more
: questions.
: When I get the seeds, do I remove
: the soft covering? How do I store
: them til spring?
:
: Thanks for all you do?

: I am new to cycads. Our road dept
: has
: recently planted what seems to me to
: be a huge collection of Florida
: Coonties. There are males and
: females there, lots of good sized
: cones. The female cones are hard
: and black right now. What signs can
: I watch for to let me know when they
: are about to break open so maybe I
: can get there in time to gather some
: seeds.
:
: The seeds will be ready by
: Christmas. If other people have the
: same idea as you do, they might want
: to pick them early and if you
: absolutely had to, you could cut the
: cones about mid November, but keep
: them intact until they fall apart on
: their own. The natural progession
: will be that you will see a lot of
: orange pushing out on the edges of
: the cones scales and then the cones
: will fall apart when it is good to
: take the seeds. The seeds should not
: be polanted then however, it is best
: to plant them in mid Spring for a
: combination of better germination
: rates and more uniform germination.
:
Keep in mind I have articles on these subjects already. I have a detailed article on germination that talks about what to do. All you needed on top of that was the time frame which is why I mentioned that specific time frame in my other post. If you didn't catch it though, clean the seeds when you are getting ready to plant them. The coating keeps them fresh while you are waiting.
