florida coontie

I am new to cycads. Our road dept has recently planted what seems to me to be a huge collection of Florida Coonties. There are males and females there, lots of good sized cones. The female cones are hard and black right now. What signs can I watch for to let me know when they are about to break open so maybe I can get there in time to gather some seeds.
