: There is a lot of talk going on
: with that auction and a lot of
: controversy that is beyond common
: sniping. People had been told that
: they were the high bidder after the
: clock showed 0-00-00 and then after
: refreshing, they had lost the
: auction. The people running the
: auction have been contacted by
: multiple people, and there will be
: more on that I'm sure.
: OK, you are the guy that was
: putting in that long wall with a
: long cycad planter, aren't you? I
: like the idea about your tent
: growing situation. I know someone
: here in FLorida who lives near the
: beach and he put seeds right in his
: sand and all the plants grew really
: fast and he didn't have any of the
: problems that you hear about. I
: think your idea sounds so good, I'd
: put in a small colony with a bigger
: structure.
: So, what are you going to do
: about the cold when it comes time?
: Is it going to be in its own mini
: greenhouse during the winter? I'll
: tell you, I have thought about it
: for years, but may be almost too
: late to really do it for me, but I
: have always thought about making
: some raised beds within a large
: greenhouse and put in a whole colony
: of microcycas for seed production.
: Unless I bought some pretty
: expensive plants, it would be about
: 15 years before anything would come
: of it. With no kids for me, the
: plants would probably end up land
: fill or something when I kick.
: Probably need to leave that to
: someone a bit younger.
I have read on Microcycas as much as I can, but there is only so much info out there, and it isn't very much. Almost every article never talks about there cold hardiness limits. What are your experiences in Florida?, i.e., How much cold can it take in winter?
We get one or two frosts usually to 25 to 29 degrees every winter. I remember in 1987 is got cold enough even Sagos died. Sagos imported from Hawaii died real easy, but 'native' sagos were o.k. It got down into the teens that year.
I'll probably be the mad-man of the neighborhood putting electric blankets on the plants every winter.
