: We were told that the seeds and even
: the leaves are extremely poisonous.
: Even to the point that they are a
: danger to local pets. Any truth to
: this? (I do realize that they
: aren't meant for consumption)
:
All parts of all cycads are poisonous. They have neurotoxins and carcenigens. Pretty much the material has to be eaten to be a problem, so if the animal doesn't eat the leaves or seeds, there should not be any problems. I get a couple of e-mails or phone calls each year from someone who has a small dog that is at the vet who is dying because they ate seeds from the cardboard plant (Zamia furfuracea)but I rarely hear anything about sagos. (Cycas revoluta) People hear about these plants being poisonous and think that if they get stuck by one of the spines, or something like that, they will have a problem, but it just doesn't work that way.
