I have a mature female sago with four-to-six inch pups at the base. The pups have put up their spring fronds. I tried to cleanly cut it from the base with a sharp shovel, but the roots "popped" off. The bulb is intact. Do I need to trim back the fronds before potting so the pup is not stressed without roots?
