Update: The Cycas panzhihuaensis seedlings at last are all sending up healthy first leaves, almost in unison and exactly five months after the sprouted seeds were first planted. Consistent, but desperately slow! By contrast, some Zamia furfuracea seeds that I recently received sprouted their first leaves in less than a week from receipt - almost immediately after the radicle emerged.

: Many thanks for your reply.
:
: The planting medium was never
: allowed to become dry, but I have
: read elsewhere that Cycas
: panzhihuaensis seedlings like to be
: kept somewhat moister than most
: other cycad species, so I shall try
: increasing the watering. The leaf
: tips look as though they dried,
: rather than rotted from excess
: moisture. The seeds are planted in
: 50% dune sand/perlite with some
: organic matter added.
:
: By the way, the temperatures here
: (in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates)
: are presently around 80°F max and
: 59° min with average RH 50-70% so I
: did not think that this was the
: cause. As I mentioned, other cycad
: species that I am trying do not have
: the same problem.

: I would be grateful to receive
: advice
: on a problem that I am experiencing
: with my C. panzhihuaensis
: seedlings. Five seeds germinated
: quite quickly and within about three
: weeks of being planted four of them
: sent up leaf shoots. Unfortunately
: each emergent leaf has withered and
: dried when it is about a quarter
: inch out of the growing medium. All
: five seeds seem to have formed
: strong root systems with tap roots
: about five inches long. I am trying
: some other Cycas , Dioon and
: Macrozamia species and those that
: have sent up leaves so far are fine.
: Any suggestions?
:
: With a good root, they should be
: fine, but the reason for this could
: be for two totally different
: reasons. If the soil was too wet,
: and the leaves looked like they
: rotted off, you would want to water
: less, or get a better draining soil.
: The most probable reason will be
: that you didn't water enough and the
: leaves aborted. This happens with
: cycas a lot, enough that I mention
: in my article on water what to do
: about this. I'm going to guess that
: this is your problem, but let me
: know which was most likely.
