I inherited 3 7' sagos when I purchased my home. The seeds are highly toxic to dogs (just spent $600 at the vet for 2). I've fenced off the female sago which has what looks to be hundreds of seeds between the layers of leaves and a new crop on top. One of the male trees has 2 dead pollen cones between it's fronds and a jungle of pups growing underneath. The lawn service guys won't go near the trees, i.e., it's up to this single female to deal with them & I'm new to yardwork. Is there any way to stop the seeds from producing? What about inhibiting the pups? I dug up a couple to give to friends and while digging saw a whole layer of them about 6-10 inches down. The one tree with the 'jungle' underneath looks very daunting with its mass of prickly fronds on top and jungle of pups underneath. If I can dig them out, how can I stop them from growing back? I want to plant something else underneath.
