Hi My name is Doret and I live in Namibia. I recently got interested in Cycads and Cycas. Little did I know it will be such a complicated hobby and a very expensive one as well. I went out on the internet to search for plants first to buy in South Africa. Was I in for a nasty suprise. I wanted to give up after I got the first pricelists. The paperword needed was almost more expensive than the plants itself. Then I found out I had to buy from a CITES nursery, I couldn't buy from a private grower and then applied for the CITES permit as well as the export permit to Namibia. Then I thought well to obtain seeds will be faster and much easier. BIG mistake. I was told seeds are even a bigger no no as was the plants itself. As I also had to obtain permits but in the same time they told me I would never obtain permits as no one could be sure that the seeds was actually true to the name. So I really find this very complicated and confusing at most and very dissapointing. I do understand that these plants have to be protected but to me it seems they want to make it impossible to get persons interested in these wonderful plants.
Are there any cycas or cycads seeds that I can get that wouldn't pose a problem?
I would really love to grow these plants. I also just started to collect Clivias.
Hope you have a great day
Greetings from Namibia
Doret
