thanks for your advice. I'll use fertilizer as the main tool.
On another note, have you tried the use of beneficial fungi on cycads? They are referred to as VAM, or vesicular arbuscular mycorrizae, (forgive me because i'm sure i'm misspelling them) and there are other groups of these as well. I was just curious if you have experimented with these and your opinions of the above?

: I have a bed of 6 month old panzhia
: seeds growing outside, most with
: their first and a few with second
: leaves. It's winter right now, so
: they are dormant. In the spring I
: plan on maxing out the nitrogen
: (with minors) and stimulating them
: to grow as much as possible. After
: reading your article on leaf cutting
: for growth stimulation, I am
: wondering if your leaf pruning idea
: would work on seedlings?, and
: further, with a one or two leaf
: seedling, would you cut all the
: leaves?, or just half? (I suppose a
: one leaf seedling can still be cut
: 50%). And then there's the question
: of how often to cut, and how long to
: allow the plants to 'recharge'(time
: spent with new leaf) before pruning
: them again.
:
: If you read the article again, you
: will see that I killed seedlings by
: doing this. The plant is stressed
: out if you cut the leaves off and
: the only way cycads can come back
: easily is if it has a high starch
: content to rely on until new leaves
: are produced. Seedlings don't have
: very much starch in them so I would
: not do this on any small cycads. In
: fact, I don't recommend doing this
: on cycads in general, but what HAS
: worked well is doing it to plants
: with multiple stems, and/or offsets
: and only removing leaves from the
: offsets and keeping the leaves on
: the main stem intact.
