: Hi, I am harvesting quite a number of
: zamia seeds {coontie right now and a
: couple others as they mature). A
: couple questions about them. First
: is the care and shelf life of zamia
: seeds, such as... should I clean and
: store them or store them
: uncleaned...? Where is the best
: place to store them, and what is a
: reasonable time of viability
: expectancy ?I am new to florida
: from Michigan and have become quite
: interested in Palms and Cycads... I
: have been starting plants from
: seeds. I have soooo much to learn
: and really have learned a lot from
: here.

I always store my zamia seeds with the coating on (to keep them naturally moist) until it is time to plant them. I have kept seeds that are picked now, until the next August, and they still sprouted, but I don't like holding them after the end of June. I usually wait until it gets warm again in late spring to plant them because all the embryos are just waiting to do something and it is warm enough that if you soak them in water for a couple of days, they will start sprouting right away. For that matter, you might get some to sprout while they are soaking. You don't want to store them in plastic bags becasue of the lack of air flow. I just pout them in nursery containers and put them in my garage. It is in the shade and cooler and also away from squirrels and other varmints that will try to take your seeds.
Take a look at my germination articles in my siteand the article on cleaning seeds. They will help you when it comes time to do something with your seeds.
