: Hi Tom,
: I didn't know there could be a
: genetic possability. I talked to a
: UF Profsor Cane(spelling?)I think he
: told me I couldn't micropropagate it
: be cause of the virus, but if it's
: genetic then that would mean
: micropropagation is in the realm of
: possablities?what are your thoughts
: on using or gibberellic acid to
: induce branching,and us traditional
: prop methods. I would like to
: propatate it or sell it.I don't have
: the scurity, and it's not doing
: anyone any good hiding away in my
: (micro)nursery.
: I have been readihg your posts here
: and @ Yahoo groups for years, and
: have learned much. Thank You for
: your generous insight. I have many
: more questions to ask you.

: My veriegated Coontie is a female
: and
: is coning . What is the chance of
: the seeds being Veriegated?
:
: If you had a male with color, about
: 15% You might get a few out of a
: whole batch if you use pollen from a
: green male, but you also might not
: get any, and that is alla ssuming it
: is and not caused by a
: virus.

I don't see why you couldn't cut it up and make lots of variegated plants. If it was a virus, all parts would have that in them. Genetically it would divide the same. I have never heard that GA forces branching, so I couldn't tell you. I would think using BA would work better, but I would not use chemicals to try this. I found that if you force new leaves to be produced while the plant is in cone (should be right now) that 4 times more often as other times, the apex will branch. What appears to be is that the lateral buds in the plant seem to activate and go on both sides of the cone, so I would do that a couple of times to get that plant producing many heads and then split them up. If you really want to be crazy, you could take one of them and cut it up in slices the way I do in my article to make multiheaded variegated females from each slice.
