The beauty about the sealer is that no matter how thick you put it on, the roots grow right through it. If you can seal up the wounds on the part at ground level, that wouldn't hurt, but if it is too damaged and rough, don't worry about it. Offset plants will normally be produced either way, but it would hurt to do it and improve your chances.
