: I would like to follow up on
: Freeda's question regarding
: propagation of the Sago Palm. We
: have grown Sago Palms in Hampton VA
: for 20 years. We have lost a number
: of these palms to cold weather, but
: somehow we have managed to keep 2
: large femals (4 ft/15 yrs old and 6
: ft/20 yrs old). Both have mulple
: heads and trunks. We have seen
: others planted outdoors but we have
: never seen any as large as ours this
: far north.
:
: My question. In April 07, these
: plants produced cones for the first
: time. We have other smaller sago's
: but none of them are producing
: cones. It appears that we do not
: have any males or they are still to
: immature for propagation. After 4
: months, the cone is intact an there
: are no signs of baby plants.I am
: concerned that if we do nothing, the
: plants go to winter in a weakend
: condition. Is it too late to remove
: the cone now in hopes that we can
: trigger new growth this summer and
: fall?

: We have a female Sago whose middle
: is
: getting bigger and bigger;there are
: two males with cones about 1/4 blk
: down the street from her; little red
: babies all around the upper trunk!
: WHAT can we do to help this
: situation to maturity, and how long
: does it take? Thanks, we are total
: amatures at this game~~~Freeda

Not at all, this is still a good time to do something. If you use the right fertilizer, you can get some good energy into your plant within the month and you might still get a fall flush, but even if you don't for some reason, the plant will still be stronger going into winter.
