: Tom,
:
: I've read your site for years. No
: one here in Plano (N.of Dallas) has
: large sago's. I'm in love and
: fascinated with them. So much so
: that 8 years ago I brought 3 four
: foot sago's from south texas and
: transplanted them in my yard. I
: have babied them and they seem to
: love it and have thrived--they are
: now probably 6 feet or more. In the
: winter we can get hard freezes that
: last for days. At first a made
: temporary hot houses of sorts with
: heat lights. Later, I just wrapped
: with blankets and they survived
: except the leaves turned brown, I
: would cut them in the spring and
: they would flush and flourish.
: Unfortunately, last year, someone
: else lived in my home and there was
: a drought--at first I think the west
: facing sago didn't get enough water
: and later to compensate might have
: been watered too much. Anyway, it
: is late june and no flush has even
: tried to begin. It almost seems as
: if the top 2-3 foot of the plant is
: dead--there are seeds at the top
: which have been there a long time
: but what worries me is that if I try
: to pluck an old leaf base or any
: part of the top, it comes out very
: easily. However, the lower part of
: the sago is sprouting random small
: leaves out the trunk and base.
: Please help, what should I do??? I
: love my sago's.
:
: Thank you soo much!!!

If all the leaf bases can be pulled off, that sounds like the top is gone and would keep going to the stem until the whole thing is gone. Now if it didn't have any leaves, I would say cut off the old seeds and force new leaves out with fertilizer. So, if not, you may s well go for it and see if the apex is rotten or not. If it is, you can at least still save the bottom now. This is the hard part. People can't stand the thought of surgery, but if it looks like it is really rotten, get back and I can tell you how to save the bottom anwyay. Tom
