: I am a newcomer to rasing cycads
: (though I have always wanted at
: least one) and there are some
: worries and questions I have. I
: ordered some seeds from Thompson
: & Morgan (Twelve total. I
: planted them in a mix of fine sand
: and peat (did not have coarse sand
: at the time, and I was worried that
: my driveway gravel would be too
: coarse), with a roughly 40/60 or
: 30/60 ratio of sphagnum peat to
: sand. This is in peat pots (so I
: don't have to worry about disturbing
: the fragile taproot) in a Jiffy
: closed container-you know, those
: semi-greenhouse ones. This is on a
: heat pad to provide extra heat and
: some humidity (I read that cycads
: require 70-60% RH). I have already
: lost two seeds to fungual
: attacks-both floaters. I do not have
: a mister or spray bottle, so I have
: kept the top on-should I take it off
: and seatrch for a spray bottle?
:
: Now I am wondering whether I have
: some germinating seeds or not. My
: seeds are splitting at the
: germinating end, but they have not
: produced a radicle (the split is in
: the right area for germination). On
: some of the seeds, red spots
: appeared on the shell before the
: split appeared. My question is,
: given the conditions I have kept
: them in, are these seeds
: germinating, or are they simply
: absorbing too much moisture? I have
: had them for around two weeks now,
: and thought that this this was just
: a tad too early for germination. The
: split appeared about three days ago
: on the earliest. Finaly, I have one
: last question regarding the genus
: that my seeds belong to. I ordered
: one set of three seeds of a species
: or variety that has silver
: foliage-what is this species?
:
I didn't answer this one because I saw you posted the same question to the cycad yahoo list, and I see you got some responses. Did you get all the answers you needed, or do I need to address anything?
