If you keep the leaves close to the apex, when they turn down they pull away at the apex which can damage or kill the plant. Lower leaves don't do that. Lower leaves, however will go down faster because many times they are older and weaker already. So, given all this, on a plant with many leaves, I would keep the ones in the middle. Not the most lower ones and not the ones right close to the apex.

: Hello, I have two fairly mature (5-6
: ft across) sego's and need to
: transplant them. What are the issues
: with this? Can it be done? What is
: the root system like, spreading or
: straight down? Where they are now is
: somewhat sun protected, where I need
: to put them will be full sun, will
: this be an issue? OK I read the
: FAQ's and you (Tom) recommend
: cutting all fronds off? If I do this
: how long will it take to have some
: growth? If I wanted to leave some of
: the leaves would it be better to
: leave the ones near the top, the
: newer growth or the older ones?
