With any question like this, I have to assume what is the most likely situation. If these plants get a minimum amount of water and fertilizer, your plant will do exactly what your plants are doing. I guess my question to you would be, what exactly is happening to the plants that makes you say that they do worse when you give them water. If your soil has good drainage and has not gone bad over time, then the plants should not do worse when watered more.
