Cranberry Islanders turned out in force to welcome and support ultra marathoners and their families, friends, and support crews at this inaugural event! Ray Williams of Nova Scotia was the winner of the men's 50K, and the women's victor was Mary Jo Johnson of Wisconson. Joseph Dunton of Maine was the 50 mile champion. In all, 22 runners from all across the USA and Canada finished. Cool dense fog made for perfect running conditions, and offered a surreal backdrop. Everyone appreciated the inspirational running quote signs, as well as the individual name/bib number/home town signs posted on almost every tree and telephone the full length of the Island! Full results and pictures will be posted soon. The race was followed by a lobster bake and awards ceremony with music, two kegs of G (Guinness and Geary's Summer Ale), dancing, and awesome energy centered around the large bonfire (inferno!) in the Athletes Village. The now legendary post-race party went well into the wee hours of the morning with ultra runners, islanders, race staff, and local and international press in attendance. Planning is already underway for 2008, with many reports from islanders who loved the positive and exciting energy of the day and evening. Greetings from Aroostook County. Great day, wonderful time and outstanding energy for CGI ULTRA!! The way the Island folks rolled out the "red carpet" to us runners/crew this w/e truly was amazing. Everyone was so welcoming and helpful- what a positive impression was made!! Hopefully next year may even be bigger and better,(but never TOO big). "The County" would like to return the hospitality and offer an invite for The County Open Half-Marathon 8/11/07 to all the MDI runners to come north for the 7th Annual running.
