in today's mailbag (below) from one of our clubs orginial members, Larry Allen, a driving force in Eastern Me running and events for decades.....
Grainy picture from the Bangor Daily News archives on the Monday after the Bar Harbor Half in mid Sept 1982... (I was age 27 and it was 27 years ago this week I think...yikes)
In foreground is George Murray (formerly from Millinocket) and winner of one of the first wheelchair races at Boston Marathon in the the mid-late 70s (I think in the low 2:20's which was a record at the time with that technology). The BDN sponsored an event through Bangor to welcome and honor George (I think he was wheeling coast to coast and was almost done on the way to Millinocket). It was supposed to be an easy group 5k run with George from the Bunyan statue to EMMC and to downtown Bangor. I was the only one who was vaguely silly enough to even try to stay near him when it became evident in the first 100 yards that George had different ideas about the pace. The picture is after turning around down at EMMC on the way back up to State St and toward downtown. The Uhaul behind me was George's support vehicle for the coast to coast and kept yelling encouragement to me. The event wasn't timed but I'm fairly sure it would've been a PR had it been. We were just flying. I know I was running much faster than the 1:14 half in BH the day before was pretty happy that I only had to go 5k and that gravity would take me down State St to downtown Bangor at the end. Needless to say, I was a bit tired for the next day or two!
