They did it!
Father and son Roger and Hogan Marquis ran and biked the length of Maine, from Fort Kent to Kittery, in ten days, as planned. They ran past Kittery to Portsmouth, then back to Kittery at the finish line – Bob’s Clam Hut – today, Sunday, May 31, 2009, ten days after starting their Wicked Long Run for Camp CaPella Kids on Friday, May 22, at the International Bridge in Fort Kent.
Alternating between one jogging on the road and the other riding a bike (dragging a carriage with tent and supplies behind), the two traveled a total of more than 500 miles, stretching the final run around Kittery just to make sure on that total mileage and after slightly rearranging the route on Friday. Each consecutive day’s wicked long run was the equivalent of more than one or maybe two or even three marathons, both father and son sharing the load.
Along the way Roger and Hogan Marquis encouraged and collected contributions to help send children with physical and developmental disabilities to camp this summer at Camp CaPella. Located on Phillips Lake in Dedham, about halfway between Bangor and Ellsworth, Camp CaPella provides handicapped-accessible facilities – now on a year-round basis – to children (and adults) with disabilities, including those unable to run 500 miles through Maine from top to bottom in ten days.
No financial numbers are available as yet. Donations collected along the way will be counted and deposited, while contributions by check are still coming in, sometimes in the flyers passed out by Roger and Hogan Marquis along their wicked long journey.
But whatever the final numbers, the Wicked Long Run for Camp CaPella Kids was a great success for all concerned, including the children with disabilities who will be at Camp CaPella this summer as a result. Roger and Hogan Marquis also spread the word about Camp CaPella throughout Maine – including news stories on TV and radio stations and in daily and weekly newspapers all along the way from start to finish, with editors and reporters and photographers and news crews often going the extra mile themselves to get their stories.
Thank you one and all.
