Hi-
I am writing to let Crow Athletics know of an upcoming state bill that would affect runners and pedestrians in a positive way. My dad, Representative Charlie Harlow, has submitted a bill which would make it a law that drivers give pedestrians 2 feet clearance on the roads. The pedestrian needs to be single file and not have a sidewalk accessible to them. There was a similar bill passed last session for cycle protection, and I feel STRONGLY that this protection be extended to runners and walkers as well.
The 124th Session has just begun, so the bill has not been assigned to a committee yet, and there has not been a public hearing date set. However, I wanted to give people advanced warning that this bill is coming before the legislature. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the more people we can get to testify on the public hearing date, the more impact we will have in passing it. But, I understand that people are very busy and may not be able to make an appearance. So, if that is the case, written testimony is often submitted, people can write their legislators or call them; but, again, actually being present makes a huge statement that we think this bill is important to the well being of our community.
When there is more information on the bill, I will re-email you and send info about which committee it will go before, which legislators to write to, and what the date for the public hearing will be. I am very hopeful that we will come together as a running community and push to get this passed. I think it only makes sense to give pedestrians some sense of security on the roads.
Thank you for reading, and if there is anything I can do to get the word out about this bill, please contact me at the email or cell # 409-0870. I hope you will pass this on to other Crow Athletics members.
Sincerely,
Denise Harlow
