Hi Sarah and All Crows!
I might be of some help as I went from nothing to marathon rather quickly. I used to run in high school and let it go while in college, where I got rather pudgy. The running bug kicked in again, for some reason, and I spent a winter on a the treadmill, getting back down to fighting weight. I don't know what got me through those tedious hours, but like you, I decided that the marathon distance was something I wanted to accomplish, even though it seemed absurdly ambitious at the time.
I'm so glad I made that decision. But what hooked me at first were the local races. If you throw yourself into some races -- 5ks and 10ks etc. -- the community building aspect of running will really draw you in. Runners really look out for each other. But at the other end of the spectrum, especially with marathon running, you become comfortable with the solitude of running and it's almost a zen or meditative experience. Those are my favorite moments.
If I could speak to myself when I was just starting out, I would say:
-- Find people to celebrate your accomplishments with.
-- Find a comprehensive stretching plan to avoid injuries (going from 0 to marathon caused more than a few musculature problems that could have been avoided).
-- Push yourself to run regularly and strategically but don't become hyper-focused on times.
And if you run the MDI marathon you'll never forget it!

: Nice to meet you Mary - virtually! Yes, let's
: get together sometime, but keep in mind that
: I have absolutely zero endurance or stamina
: at the moment! I guess we would be decent
: partners? :)
:
: As soon as I can scrape together some loose
: change, I will be heading over to CMS to get
: some shoes. I have always found good hiking
: and trail running shoes there, and have
: shoes that I like. I just need something for
: running on pavement I guess.
:
: I have found a training program that looks
: good, and hopefully I will be able to get my
: milage up to three within the next ten
: weeks, without keeling over...! Then it will
: be time for earnest marathon training!
:
: I do live in the area - I have been a Jordan
: Pond House junkie for the last three
: summers, and messed around in the winter,
: but have never really gotten to hang out
: with the young adults of the area. I'm not
: going to school - yet! I just started
: working at Reel Pizza, and love it, and am
: starting to meet people there so that's
: exciting. Maybe I'll see you there?
:
: I'll look forward to meeting you anywhere
: though - I have mornings and early
: afternoons off pretty much everyday. Here's
