I'm Mary... I'm sort of in your shoes a little. I have run on and off for years, more on during high school when I did XC, and the past couple of years I have been running more -- my longest was a half-marathon in 2006. 2007 was my last year of college, so I didn't get much training in, and now I find myself sort back to bare bones when it comes to mileage. (I haven't run a step since November, and there wasn't much happening before that!)
I believe that everyone has a runner inside of them, it's just a matter of training and upping mileage. I too, want to run a marathon, as a director of MDI 26.2 I'm a little embarrassed that I have not run one yet. (Actually, this past fall my brother [who smokes like a chimney, drinks like a lush, and hates running] was home visiting the week of MDI 26.2, and while volunteering at the pre-race expo he was so impressed with the shapes, sizes, and ages of the registrants that he signed up the night before the race, and finished to tell the story!) So, long story short, if you even have an ounce of drive inside yourself to run, you can do it!
I used to work for Cadillac Mountain Sports (CMS) in Bar Harbor, and their staff is very knowledgeable regarding footwear, so I would recommend them to start looking for running shoes. I personally wear Nike, but it really depends on the person. CMS also has a really great return policy -- you can run in the shoes and still take them back if they don't feel right.
There is a lot of information out there to get a running program started. One of the best places I have found to start is the training page of coolrunning.com. If you look on the left-hand side there are links for both 'new runners' and 'training schedules'. There is a straight-up plan for brand new runners with no athletic ability, and you could always skip a few weeks ahead on that schedule as it sounds like your not going from the couch to training. The training schedules page has schedules for all sorts of distances, including marathon, but the most important thing is to just get started and get a strong base built for yourself.
Running partners always help. Maybe we can get together sometime? At the moment I have no stamina or endurance, so keep that in mind.
Just curious, are you from the area? Or do you go to COA or work at the Jax? I only ask because I saw your membership application come in the other day and I saw that you were 21, and I grew up here and graduated from COA in the spring, and know most of the younger crowd (I'm 24).
Best of luck getting started!
M
