I joined up with Gary at Newton Centre, or rather, started running there around the 20 mile mark and he caught up with me at the top of the hill - I'd estimated where he might catch up after seeing him while driving in. My plodder pace for the final 6 probably kept him from being closer to 3 hrs; still a bit faster than my usual training pace.
I've been over those roads for years at all hours and don't think I've ever seen them that empty. Lots of chat about the course and the sites we were passing. We hit the finish and then spent some time chatting over some (non alcoholic) beveridges, watching the steady stream of folks beginning their year with Starbucks but without the run beforehand.
Of course, the decent run and good chatter built enthusiasm which led me to question my man... er, runnerhood. So instead of taking the T all the way back to my car, I ran 4 miles worth which gave me an even 10 for the day. Crossed paths with local runner Bob Gamere just past Fenway Park, who noted that the two biggest running days in the year are Thanksgiving and New Years (with all the resolutions), but I didn't see that many more runners than usual.
Next year I'll try to be ready to rendezvous at the firehouse (well, maybe Newton City Hall). But first, I just might get my first 50 mile week in over a year with just a pair of average mile days to close the week.
