Always 6 degrees of separation...
I remember (as will Gary) the day we brought Andy Palmer to MDI the first time (in about 1981 or so). As memory serves it was a "star-studded" group with Mike Gaige/Peter Millard and others....We went up and "around the mountain" from Long Pond at about 6 min pace! Andy immediately fell in love with running on the carriage trails. A few years later, I moved to Gainesville Fl (aka Kernsville in Once a Runner). Andy eventually took over the Maine Running Camp at COA and like most of us, he was a BIG fan of Mr. Parker's book. As I understand it, Andy eventually invited John to be a guest counselor at his camp in Bar Harbor. In turn, Andy moved to N Florida for his Phd studies (where John lived). If John Parker has a place on MDI it somehow seems right and it works for me!
Oh, the final bit of trivia for any fan of Once a Runner. On the cover of the book, there is a slightly blurred photograph of shirtless gaunt runner, either headed out for a run or coming in. It wasn't John Parker. It wasn't an anonymous model. His name; Bruce Carpenter. He was one of many talented runners in the Gainesville running community in the late 70's-early 80's. He ran about 2:16 for a marathon (when that wouldn't get you a plane ticket from Trenton to Boston). He was a "running buddy" of mine and further, he worked for me as a "night manager" at a little running store that I ran in Gainesville for a few years. Bruce was working on his Phd at the Univ of Fl at the time. I don't know where Bruce is at present but trust me, he IS a very interesting, unique fellow.
I just placed an order for Again to Carthage, wouldn't miss it!
