First and foremost, I appreciate the Portland Girls & Boys Club for doing their best to keep the race's streak going strong. History is important, and I can certainly understand wanting to keep a streak alive. I agree with what Stevie V said about courses (like Boston) having 'ammendments'. However, where the race in question was held a full seven months later, and the course completely different ('makeshift'), and too short, it doesn't seem fair to call it "the 78th annual Patriots Day 5-Miler". (It wasn't Patriot's Day [or even close to Patrot's Day], it wasn't 5 miles, and from what I can see, it wasn't even close to the same course.)
In my very, very, VERY humble opinion, there is nothing wrong with being the oldest road race in Maine. Perhaps not the oldest continuosly run, but I would agrue that the race is still the oldest in Maine.
Again, it sounds like the race committee made the right call on canceling that day, but perhaps a reschedule closer to that day, and still on the same course would have been more fitting.
Let's just hope that when global warming gets really bad, and MDI is under water, the race committee won't move the event to Ellsworth and continue to call it the "Mount Desert Island Marathon"... hmm, maybe we can have a scuba marathon, no need for water stops -- laugh!
Just my $0.02... :)
