Posted by RSVP crows on July 23, 2007, 1:07 pm Great Cranberry Island also is known for producing a equally legendary road race in the 70s and 80s which had to enlist a lottery system ( the first known in US running history) to select entrants because of the overwhelming popularity of the event. This race quickly earned a cult following and was named one of the top 25 in the USA by Runners World Magazine at that time. This years event which is being hailed as Runnings Woodstock (because of the length and other festivities surrounding the event) is only open to runners who have met the qualifications to run but all others are invited to attend to do training runs and then stay and cheer on the Ultra Runners. Families and especially musicians are encouraged to attend to add to the festivities 276 4226
We would like to formally invite runners specatotors and their families to attend the Great Cranberry Ultra Marathon http://www.crowrunning.com/gci_ultras.html to be held on Saturday July 28 starting at 11 am.
Runners from all across North America will be competing at Ultra Marathon distances of 50 kilometers, 50 miles or 100 kilometers. This event is being held in a place which has a long history of producing excellent events and athletes, even being compared by some as Hayward Field referring to the legendary track at the University of Oregon known for being an inspirational place to compete. Per capita Great Cranberry Island has arguably produced more Boston Marathoners than any town of any size anywhere (current year round pop. 35, 12 runners and counting have qualified to run in the Boston Marathon.)

......a few last points. The Great Cranberry Ultra features the longest running race currently held in the State of Maine. It is being held on what is arguably the smallest most remote geographic location for a race of this length ever to be contested, Great Cranberry Island (about 700 acres, 2+ miles from the mainland) This race is the furthest east of any Ultra marathon held in the USA. We are one of the few races on the planet that runners had to pre qualify to compete in.(i.e; Boston Marathon) All entrants must have completed A. three complete marathons OR B. one Ultra marathon, to even be considered as an official starter. These facts alone help make our event even more unique and one that will feature an elite starting field by their many outstanding running accomplishments. Due to the late starting time for a race of this length (11am that is needed to boat everyone out) some will still be running after the sun sets and we have planned accordingly and scheduled our event for the night of a full moon.
