Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
Passing the Southwest Harbor Foodmart on your left is a study in how strange in some ways the sport of marathon running is. We the participants are so absorbed in what we're doing we feel at the very least 99.9% of the earths population must know it and should appreciate our sacrifices and struggles. When you pass a grocery store such as this. What you might notice is some people are going about their daily lives without it seems even a clue what is going on right in front of them. We're not saying they don't care but some people look at us as we might look a zoo animals penned up in a cage. Next is Fernald Point Rd on your left, if you follow it to the end and take the short hike to Valley Cove on Somes Sound you will be looking across at Sargeant Drive on the opposite shore where you were running not long ago. You'll also be pretty close to the outfall of Man O' War brook, the place where this gurgling stream empties into the Sound. It was also a place where British Man O' Wars refilled their fresh water casks. Interesting to us is the fact that the Kings Redcoats that were sent to put we the naughty colonialists back in line stopped off on MDI to get a drink of water. One completely unofficial and undocumented scenario that comes to mind is when the Brits stopped off here in Maine they were faced with the most stubborn group of folks imaginable (which is a trademark of we Mainer's) So they set sail for what they thought were softer opponents down in Mass to attempt to put them in line (which as we all know didn't work out either). You're probably asking what's this all got to do with the last mile of a marathon? What it all means is to finish a marathon you have to be stubborn, relentless and you can't quit. Our race directors roots also go back to the first settlers in this area. To create a marathon from scratch, (he is also our race founder), you have to have someone that is Stubborn with a capital S, who has a vision and someone who can rally entire communities to believe and to support the vision of what a marathon can do and can be which lucky for you IS the case on Mount Desert Island! If marathon running takes focus, think of magnifying that intense focus many times and you'll get an idea of what it takes to create and direct a marathon. As you pass Norwood Cove you've reached the sea again, but now you're on the opposite side of MDI. I know we said its all down hill from 24 which is true (net elevation loss) but at this point if we left a pencil in the road that you had to step over you say it was a hill. With that said there is a very small incline just past Norwood Cove. When you pass Seal Cove Rd, on your right. (this is where spectators and family members MUST park.) It's a straight shot to Mile 26 which is located at Herrick Rd. Now is the time to smell that finish line, just put your head down and go with anything and everything you got.
