Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
Are you seeing a mirage or is the road really falling away? Fatigue can and often will do funny things to you. Its hard to trust anything when you are so tired but trust this, you have reached a point in our race where you could almost fall into town. PLEASE let gravity do its thing, lean down and into the hill and enjoy the ride. Passing Echo Lake Beach is another good thing it's bye bye lake and hello ocean. The trees adorned in all their red, orange and yellow splendor are guiding the way for you now, standing so silently while being so loud by the colors they wear. Perhaps it's your utter fatigued state but you might even imagine them as brightly clad cheering crowds. As we Crows like to say do whatever it takes, just get er done! All you have to do now is maintain momentum. You don't have to go faster just do what you're doing for a little bit longer. This is why you train and what you have trained for! The sign for mile 25 approaches and with it often comes any sort of emotion imaginable. Sometimes you go from being more or less fine to a fussy mess in a single stride. We like to remind people of the fact that in a half marathon when you get to 12 miles you give yourself permission to get tired because you're almost done, yet in a marathon you give the 12 mile mark about the same amount of attention as a yesterdays newpaper. So do this, when you get to mile 25 (or better yet before your start) tell yourself I'm doing a 50K today that way when your reach mile 25 you'll be armed with the same indifference you had at mile 12. Anyway you choose to do it it's a major accomplishment and a mile is something we can all get our minds around, one more and a little extra to go now, just focus and keep moving forward!
Take advantage of the special MDI Marathon/Crow Athletics offer in your race packets and you might even qualify to be inducted in our one of a kind Fallout Shelter. http://www.crowrunning.com/fallout_shelter/fallout.html
The best news is you can run with us next year for 1/2 price! Don't wait though as our 2007 field is strictly limited to the first 1000 who enter! Don't forget to patronize all our sponsors.
Double knot your shoes laces race day and make SURE you Champion Chip is securely tied on. Drink at aid stations (even if you are not thirsty by the time you are it's to late.) Guys put band aids on your nipples, bloody 11s look horrible in race pictures and feel worse in the shower, trust us we know! Wear you bib number on the front of you shirt or shorts where we can see it.
