Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
Looking ahead the road starts to rise again. It's completely normal to feel every bump and crack in the pavement now. The dense woods to your right and left look like an inviting place to take a nap, don't do it! Passing the sign on your right for Ikes Point is a good thing, this means you are nearing the southern end of Echo Lake. Think of this sign as a sign of your steady forward progress. On your left you will be approaching Acadia and St. Sauveur Mountains, you're still climbing this is a damn tough stretch both physically and mentally. Remember to breathe as your body really needs air. Again contrary to what our topo map may show there is a small break in this relentless up hill terrain and you'll arrive at a small but very welcomed down grade. Try to recharge your batteries and let gravity do its thing. The drop is short but anything down is good. Sadly up you go again to arrive at Mile 24. Another great mile is behind you and best of all it's all downhill from here! The proverbial barn door is wide open now and you can almost smell the hay, but don't think beyond getting yourself to mile 25. Good work!
