Just around the corner from the finish line. You can't forget to e-mail all your friends and family members back home to tell them how awesome you did! While you're there enjoy a cup of coffee and a nice relaxing lunch. Must try this: http://www.members.boardhost.com/crowathletics/msg/1156962115.top
Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
As you exit the serenity and beauty of Sargeant Drive where over the last few miles you have been alone but for your thoughts, your fellow runners and our fabulous volunteers. Be prepared to re-enter the world where family members and supporters will be waiting anxiously for your arrival! Give them all a thumbs up or a smile for cheering you on and for supporting your training over the weeks, month or years. Without them we'd all be just running alone on some road out there. While we are on this subject please be nice to our (your) volunteers. They are out there to help you, thank them! The run from the Rt 198 intersection to Mile 18 has a slight upgrade, it will not slow you down. These are the miles in a marathon where you body needs oxygen, its a common mistake to not get enough air because as you get fatigued many runners seem take shallower breaths in other words focus on breathing in deeply and breathing (blowing) out hard. Mile 18 is also the no mans land before the magic number 20 where different things start to happen and you have to really stay focused now. The foliage in past editions was almost neon here! Only 8.2 miles to go!
Little Notch Bakery in Southwest Harbor located 100 feet past the finish line (on the right) is one of the favorite places for the MDI Marathon staff to have lunch.
